We
have grown to a staff of ten and are so grateful for your support.
Your membership will help us do the following:
Restore
racial issues to the national consciousness...
- Partnering
with the California Teachers Association and Kaiser Permanente,
we address unconscious bias and its correlation with
the academic achievement and health of people of color. Focusing
on unconscious bias allows for discussions on race driven by
awareness rather than blame - research has already shown that
unconscious bias may be reversed once it's brought to someone's
attention.
- We
provide media & communications support to Kamehameha
Schools, a 119-year old school founded to restore the decimation
of Native Hawaiians through education. Kamehameha Schools is
currently fighting a Ninth Circuit ruling stating that its policy
of offering admissions preferences to applicants of Native Hawaiian
ancestry is unlawful.
- I
am interviewed by numerous state and local media outlets, including
my having been featured on Al Franken's Air America Radio show
to share my views on how the nomination of Janice Brown to the
DC Circuit Court of Appeals would harm civil rights.
- We
commissioned a jazz orchestra commemorating the 1944 explosion
at the munitions loading dock at Port Chicago that killed more
than 320 sailors, most of them African American, and injured
hundreds more. Outcry over the Port Chicago incident was pivotal
in ridding the U.S. Navy's policy of racial segregation.
- We
published Preserving Diversity in Higher Education, a manual
providing a comprehensive legal interpretation of the U.S. Supreme
Court decisions in the University of Michigan cases (Grutter
and Gratz) for law schools and universities.

Build
effective progressive alliances...
- We
help facilitate a California coalition that is analyzing the
educational and economic harms resulting from the 1996 passage
of Proposition 209. In crafting a public education & media
campaign that is research-driven, we seek to bolster public
support for affirmative action.
- Coordinating
the coalition Californians for Fair & Independent Judges,
we rally opposition to the confirmation of extreme conservative
judges to the federal bench (including Janice Rogers Brown,
John Roberts and Samuel Alito) by engaging Senators Feinstein
& Boxer, holding informational sessions with editorial boards,
publishing op-eds and letters-to-the-editor, organizing press
conferences, and distributing resources for public education
on the nominees.
- EJS
Board member Tobias Wolff correlated the issue of same sex marriage
with African American segregation in an op-ed piece to the Los
Angeles Times, Different Battle, Same Struggle.
- In
2003, we played a pivotal role in defeating Ward Connerly's
Proposition 54 in California which, had it passed, would
have made it illegal for public entities to collect statistics
based on race.
Create
discourse on government as a force for good...
- In
February 2006, we filed our second amicus curiae brief
in the U.S. Supreme Court in Randall v. Sorrell, a Vermont case
that addresses the constitutionality of mandatory campaign spending
limits in state campaigns, illustrating how the lack of reasonable
limits on campaign spending deprives poor and minority communities
of an effective voice in our democracy.
- We
continue to challenge FEMA on their continued failure to
assist the victims of the 2005 Gulf hurricanes, calling attention
to the fact that the federal government has an obligation to
protect all people regardless of race or class.

We
are not afraid to lobby and litigate. When an EJS spokesperson
speaks out in the media, in the courtroom or in a public forum,
people often ask what they can do to help. Our messages resonate
with many communities, and people appreciate our willingness
to take a stand.
The
recent Supreme Court confirmation battles tell us how important
it is for us to consolidate our membership base. We need to
enhance our collective identity to represent a critical mass of
racial justice advocates like you. With your support, we will
continue taking strong positions on key racial justice issues
by organizing leaders across multiple disciplines for strategic
action.
Membership
support will help diversify our financial base. Often, foundations
cannot support the bold actions EJS takes in standing for justice,
so we depend on individual donors and membership fees to support
our political advocacy work.
Please
read more about the various levels of membership on the left.
We will offer you a variety of premiums, including a membership
card (good for discounts at EJS events), an EJS t-shirt and must-read
publications. But the most important premium will be your strengthening
of our collective voice in the challenging political battles to
come.
Hope
you join us!
