Virtual Black Wall Street – West

As part of our commemoration of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, we wanted to highlight local Black businesses, to pay homage to the flourishing Black Wall Street that existed in Tulsa prior to the white instigated violence that led to the massacre. Black Wall Street and the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa allowed dollars used in the community, to stay within the community, helping to make the Black residents in Greenwood self-sufficient and prosperous.

In our world today, though overt racism and racially-motivated, state sponsored violence is no longer as rampant as it was 100 years ago, the legacy of slavery, Jim Crow policies, and the separate but equal doctrine continue to lead to inequitable outcomes for communities of color when compared to white communities. Our Virtual Black Wall Street – West aims to honor the Greenwood District’s Black Wall Street, by providing Bay Area residents with options with which to keep money within the community and support Black Businesses.
