About the Organizations and Coalitions

The Equal Justice Society (https://equaljusticesociety.org) is transforming the nation’s consciousness on race through law, social science, and the arts. Led by President Eva Paterson, our legal strategy aims to broaden conceptions of present-day discrimination to include unconscious and structural bias by using social science, structural analysis, and real-life experience. Currently, EJS targets its advocacy efforts on school discipline, special education, and the school-to-prison pipeline, race-conscious remedies, and inequities in the criminal justice system. The Oakland, Calif.-based nonprofit also engages the arts and artists in creating work and performances that allow wider audiences to understand social justice issues and struggles.

Founded in 1985, the California Civil Rights Coalition (https://calcivilrights.org) is a statewide community of civil rights organizations, activists, educators, lawyers, and advocates representing a wide range of issues and working as one to create a just and healthy society. We stand for quality education for all, good jobs, affordable housing, access for people with disabilities, safe neighborhoods, environmental justice, LGBTQ equality, a fair criminal justice system, access to healthcare and transit, economic equity, immigrants’ rights, social equity, racial justice, increased opportunities for disadvantaged communities, and a populace, government and business community that share a responsibility to ensuring human dignity for all Californians. CCRC is fiscally sponsored by the Equal Justice Society.

Remembering 1619 (https://remembering1619.org) The Equal Justice Society will host a series of events and activities throughout 2019 to observe the 400th anniversary of slavery in the United States. 1619 was the beginning of much misery, degradation, evil, and pain in our country. We have fought mightily to undo the damage. EJS hopes that we can shine a light on our history while invoking the “better angels of our nature.” We will partner with organizations, law firms, companies, and individuals to support our year-long observance through a number of activities.
