EJS will review applications on a rolling basis until the position is filled or January 31, 2027, whichever is earlier.
EJS has an HBCU Law Internship position available for Summer 2027. EJS seeks a community-minded law student enrolled in one of the six HBCU law schools (Florida A&M University College of Law, Howard University School of Law, North Carolina Central University School of Law, Southern University Law Center, TSU Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and UDC David A. Clarke School of Law) to conduct legal analysis through research and writing, assist with policy advocacy and public education, and author cutting-edge legal articles for our Health Equity Newsletter.
Intern duties include participating in our litigation efforts and strategy meetings, conducting legal research, drafting memoranda, and providing or assisting with equity-focused trainings.
EJS seeks applicants with a demonstrated commitment to racial and social justice who are motivated to join modern civil rights struggles and develop their written/oral advocacy and community engagement skills along the way. Interns are expected to work both collaboratively and independently in either a remote or hybrid work set up. The internship is open to HBCU law students who have completed at least their 1L year.
Location: Oakland, California, or remote.
Compensation: Interns must first seek funding through their law school internship or field placement programs, scholarships, or another source. EJS provides supplemental funding such that the intern’s compensation totals $8,000 for a full-time summer schedule (35 hrs/week for 10 weeks).
Rolling Deadline: EJS will review applications on a rolling basis until the position is filled or January 31, 2027, whichever is earlier. We highly recommend early application, but 1L students should comply with their law school’s guidelines regarding applying for summer positions.
Application: Please email your (1) cover letter, (2) resume, (3) writing sample (a legal memorandum that is no more than 10 pages), and (4) list of three references to jobs@equaljusticesociety.org with “Summer 2027 HBCU Law Intern Application” in the subject line.
