zabrina-aleguire-equal-justice-societyThe Equal Justice Society announced that Zabrina Aleguire will join us on January 11, 2016, as Acting Legal Director to fill in for Allison Elgart who is on maternity leave.

Zabrina has been Senior Staff Attorney and Education Project Director at Legal Services for Children (LSC) in San Francisco. At LSC, she defended students in expulsion hearings and advocated on a statewide level for school discipline reforms that promote restorative practices and trauma-informed alternatives.

“Zabrina’s experience and skills fit beautifully into our current work challenging school discipline policies that feed the school-to-prison pipeline,” said EJS President Eva Paterson. “She will help EJS maintain the pace of our efforts related to our lawsuit against the Kern High School District as well as our collaboration resulting from our settlement with the Antioch Unified School District.”

“I am thrilled to join the visionary team at EJS and to partner with such strong litigators to combat harsh and racially discriminatory discipline in the most needed areas,” Zabrina added, touting the advancement of positive alternatives to suspension that schools can use to repair conflict, create community, reduce bias, and heal.

Before joining LSC, she clerked in the Southern District of New York, and was a fellow at The Door’s Legal Services in New York City advocating for youth aging out of foster care. Zabrina also previously represented parents in dependency cases in Brooklyn as a public defender. She received her B.A. at Furman University and her J.D. from New York University School of Law.
