Fascism
NOUN
1. an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization.
synonyms: authoritarianism · totalitarianism

Our country is sliding into fascism. I feel like the proverbial frog who is put in a pot of water that is gradually heated. The water is boiling. We need to invoke the Spirit of our newly departed ancestor, Congressman John Lewis.

The son and husband of a federal judge sitting on a case that might involve Trump are shot and killed by a man pretending to be a FedEx driver and I search the papers to find any mention of this atrocity that I read about in Maya Wiley’s Twitter feed.

Early on during this reign of terror and error, there was a book review in The New York Times implying that Trump’s rise is eerily like the rise of Hitler.

Today as storm troopers are scooping up people without warrants (Guardian: “Trump’s paramilitary squads descend on Portland”), this phrase from the book On Tyranny quoted in a recent NY Times column that follows is particularly chilling:

“ The month after Donald Trump’s inauguration, the Yale historian Timothy Snyder published the best-selling book ‘On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons From the Twentieth Century.’ It was part of a small flood of titles meant to help Americans find their bearings as the new president laid siege to liberal democracy.

One of Snyder’s lessons: “Be wary of paramilitaries.” He wrote, “When the pro-leader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the end has come.” In 2017, the idea of unidentified agents in camouflage snatching leftists off the streets without warrants might have seemed like a febrile Resistance fantasy. Now it’s happening.”

The New York Times: “Trump’s Occupation of American Cities Has Begun
Protesters are being snatched from the streets without warrants. Can we call it fascism yet?

Luckily people are fighting back through lawsuits and the absolutely fabulous wall of moms. Mr. George Floyd called out for his mother as he was being murdered and these mothers heard him.
